February 2015 Business Luncheon Report 03-03-2015

February 2015 BYUMS Business Lunch.  Reported By:  Treaver Hodson, Sacramento Chapter Board

Approximately 50 business and community leaders and professionals gathered for our BYU Management Society February 2015 Business Lunch held in Sacramento, California.  Our guest speaker was Elder Carl B. Pratt, Emeritus General Authority of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  He spoke on the topic of “Lessons from 35 Years of Church Service in Latin America.”

Elder Pratt was sustained a member of the First Quorum of the Seventy on April 5, 1997. His professional career included work as a law clerk in the U.S. Court of Appeals, 10th Circuit, and legal counsel at Kirton & McConkie for 19 years, serving the Church in South America. He also has served the Church in numerous callings including, Regional Representative in Peru, temple sealer, and president of the Spain Seville Mission (1988-1991). Elder Pratt was released from the First Quorum of the Seventy and designated as an emeritus General Authority in October 2011. He was later called to serve as the President of the Mexico City MTC where he oversaw its relocation and expansion. He concluded his service at the MTC in January of this year.

During his remarks, Elder Pratt provided insights regarding the prophecy from The Book of Daniel in the Old Testament and its present-day fulfillment through the growth of the Church in Mexico, Central America, and South America.  He recounted numerous stories involving the guiding hand of the Lord as Elder Pratt worked to resolve legal and political issues associated with the growing Church.  He also offered an intimate perspective into the inspiration and dedication of Church leaders with whom he worked, such as President Gordon B. Hinckley, Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, and Elder Russell M. Nelson.  His most recent assignment involved the expansion of the missionary training center in Mexico City, Mexico following the recent extension of the missionary age.  Elder Pratt testified of his experience in Mexico:  “The Lord knows what He is doing.”  Elder Pratt concluded with a powerful witness, again from The Book of Daniel, “Blessed be the name of God for ever and ever:  for wisdom and might are his.”

We appreciate the time Elder Pratt and his family took to be a guest at our lunch. We hope you can join us next time.
